Escape Velocity Spring Series Easter Weekend results are in. Saturday, March 22: Atomic B-group C-group Sunday, March 23: Aldergrove Lake Park A-group B-group C-group Novice Race.
Saturdays race should be renamed as the Atomic Roubaix. A day or two before the race about a kilometer of the course was ripped up leaving it as gravel. This was a downhill stretch with a 90 degree right turn half way down. Everyone managed to stay upright in the gravel, but there where about a dozen flat tires.
Sundays race was Aldergrove Lake. Cold and wet conditions kept the number of starters down.

EV Spring Series - Zero Ave and Armstrong
Announcement at Pedal Mag...
We only get the Zero Avenue course once this year (except for BCMCA racers who will get another chance this summer..) It is a fun, rolling course. Only about 50m of climbing per lap. With the final sprint up the one snippy little climb on 12 Ave up to 240 St. Parking is on 8 Ave west of 240 St.
Armstrong on Sunday (don't forget to switch to Daylight Savings Time before you go to bed on Saturday) is the start of the climbing courses. About 90m of climbing in a 3 step climb. With the final sprint towards the top of the climb. Parking is on 80 Ave, east of Armstrong Road.

EV Spring Series - upgrade points
This is from Cycling BC's rules:
6. What races can I enter to earn upgrade points?
Any race registered on Cycling BC’s provincial road calendar that offers all or some of the standard ability categories offers upgrade points for those categories, according to the scale (5 places deep): 8, 6, 4, 3, 2. This includes BC Cup Races.
Cycling BC does not track upgrade points for club, regional, or sport-class races (example: the EV spring series, weeknight races). However, riders who win their category at such a race may claim 1 upgrade point, provided that:
• It can be verified that the race was supervised by Commissaires
• The win occurred in a category of equal or greater difficulty than the rider’s current ability category
• The win can be verified by an independent source (i.e. a web site)
• At least 20 riders were present in the category
It is the rider’s responsibility to collect the necessary supporting information for presentation to Cycling BC. Usually, the name of the Commissaire present and a reference to the web site containing the results is sufficient.
So it would appear that you can get some upgrade points, if you win.

EV Spring Series - River Road - be careful out there
Escape Velocity Spring series starts this Sunday... with the always fun, fast and flat River Road course. Current forecast is for rain on Saturday and Monday, but sun on Sunday... So hopefully it will be a nice day.
I pre-rode this two weeks ago. The infamous pot-hole at the third corner (262 St and 84th Ave) has been filled in. Otherwise nothing has changed. The River Road (88th Ave.) portions are wide and flat and has (mostly) a paved shoulder. The final leg, 262 St, is slightly downhill with some rough pave.
Be wary of riding in the middle of the pack, especially in the C-group, last year someone went down in the middle of the group on River Road (i.e. the flattest, widest, best part of the course...)
If you are serious about contesting the sprint, watch out for the final lap, things get hectic at the final corner and there have been numerous crashes on River Road just past the turn as people jump out of the saddle to get started on the final (about 600m) sprint.
If you are not going to contest the sprint you probably want to sit back and make your way carefully and safely around the corner.
As the first race of the EV Spring Series this can be one of the most popular. So be careful if its a sunny day there can be upwards of a hundred riders in C's and correspondingly large numbers in B and A groups.
