Peak Centre Winter Racing Series –Stage 2 Results

 

Stage 2 was the first running of the Extended Time Trial course this season.  The Extended TT is the only course repeated through the series to allow riders to gauge improvements in fitness through the off season.  The course is 30km long with a few moderate climbs and a definite net gain in elevation by the finish line.  The current national records on the course are 45:22.9 held by Mike Nash of Ottawa and 50:44.3 held by Sue Schlatter of Ottawa.  The previous Vancouver record on the course was 50:12.8 held by Ted Russo.

 

Setting the bar high for the rest of the season, Casey Roth (Peak) put his head down in stage 2 to a convincing win a 48:42.4. For the first third of the course, Casey was locked in a battle with Jim Tsilemos (RWR). Neither rider was able to put more than 150m on each other until Tsilemos eventually conceded and faded to 5^th place. While that was happening, West coast riders Tony Zackary and Roger Lee where waging their own battle for second place.  Tony powered out to and early lead but Roger slowly started closing the gap on the second half of the course. As the course turned up the final climb, Roger tried to close the gap but ran out of road.  In the end Tony took second place and the new Vancouver record for the Extended TT with a time of 49:48.8.  Roger came in just a few seconds later in 49:56.6.

 

In the woman's field, Wendy Blagdon (Emd/Serono) took off from the gun rode strong to finish with a time of 57.27.3 ahead of Vancouver's Alison Setton (58:46.9) and Ottawa's Diane Marleau (59:19.9).
