Mt. Seymour HC - Provincial Race ITT

Barb Zimich is bringing back the ever popular Mt. Seymour Hill Climb this year. Scheduled for Sunday August 10 the day after the Escape Velocity Provincial Championship ITT in Squamish.

This event was not on the 2007 calendar but has been run for many years prior to that.

This year it is being billed in the Cycling BC calendar as an ITT, so it may be interesting to see if anyone shows up with the time trial gear. Some of the grades are just low enough that aero gear would be worth while. And being run the day after the ITT in Squamish means everyone should be well warmed up and have their time trial bikes tuned up.

Anyone over thirty can also try this out on May 17 when BCMCA is doing this as a Hill Climb.

Escape Velocity Warp Speed TT and WTNC!

Escape Velocity announces Warp Speed TT and WTNC!

Ryan Cousineau's timely report on the nature of time:
Next Sunday (May 4) will be a time of trial. To be specific, it's Time Trial time.

Okay, I'll stop now. It's the Warp Speed Time Trial in Abbotsford. Sign-on is day-of only, cheap at $20, and starts at 8 am. First rider goes off at 9:15. Details at the Warp Speed page.

The Tuesday after that (May 6), it's time for the start of the World Tuesday Night Championships. It's the most painful way to spend a half-hour, and the attendance proves you sure like pain!

Please note that this year, we will not be doing Day-Of licenses for any events. Riders interested in a low-cost way to get racing are encouraged to get the new Cycling BC Citizen License.

So, forecast next Sunday: pain, followed by more pain (except in case of rain) on Tuesday. Enjoy!

Race the Ridge - Final results

See here for final results and here for Pedal Magazine report.

So the results are in for Race the Ridge ’08. I hope you all had a good time in Maple Ridge and will be back next year. If you have any comments, complaints or compliments (especially the latter) we’d love to here from you.

Also stay tuned, we had a photographer at the course that will be posting pictures. I will be posting a link for him shortly.

Finally a couple notes on results; TT times (definitive time) were used as a tie break for points. If you finished outside the points, your road race place (feature race) was the deciding factor.

Overview:
“Le Tour de Okanagan” will be held for the first time on June 22nd, 2008. The cycle tour will start in Kelowna and finish in Vernon, a distance of 105 km. This is a first city to city cycle tour for the Thompson Okanagan, and is officially sanctioned by Cycle BC and the Masters Cycling of BC and is in their respective calendars.

It is a point to point race for provincial cyclists in all the various categories. Recreational riders can do a 30 km fun ride or also challenge themselves to do the 105 km. Also a family fun ride for everyone to try and complete “Le Tour”. There is a 7 hour time limit so that most participants of all abilities will have enough time to complete the tour and receive a medal. “Le Tour” is an official road cycle tour, but recreational cyclists doing the fun ride may use mountain bikes, tandems, etc and other unconventional machines driven by manpower.

The route of the tour will cover some of the most spectacular scenery and viewpoints of the Okanagan Lake and surrounding mountains. This stunning route begins at the Kelowna City Hall and continues over the bridge to Westside Road, all along the lake to the Kamloops Hwy 97 and into Vernon via the Old Kamloops Road.

The organizers have a mission and vision to make this cycling tour the biggest and greatest cycle tour in Canada, attracting cyclists and spectators to the Okanagan Valley from all over Canada and also abroad. “Le Tour” is going to be a real “Wheels Festival” celebrating the bicycle in all its forms. A trade show is planned for 2009.

The organizers expect approximately 500 riders to do the first “Le Tour”, and have the support of both the communities of Kelowna and Vernon and cyclists from all over BC. Various volunteer groups and organizations will take part in the activities on June 22nd. “Le Tour” will also be a fundraising event for the Cancer Foundation. The main goal of the event is to promote active living for young and old through the sport of cycling.

Peak Winter Racing Series – Stage 18 Results

The 18th and final stage of the Ride with Rendall/ Peak Winter Racing series took place this week in various centres across Canada. Taking his first stage win of the series, Casey Roth averaged 302 watts on his way to a time of 50:25.8. Following in second, were strong showings from Montreal riders, Louis Boileau and Bruno Plafter. Boileau and Plafter both finished with a time of 50:47.5. Boulieau squeaked into second place by a scant 10 milliseconds upon review of the timing file.

The woman’s field did not have the high drama of a split second finish, but it did produce strong rides from Nicola Johnson, Diane Marleau, and Janice Kandestin. Johnson finished with a time of 59:06.4 to take the win. Marleau and Kandestin finished with times of 1:00:12.0 and 1:01:17.8, respectively.

In Vancouver, Brian Griffin took the top spot with a time of 53:31.0 and Brian Kuchinka and Charles Nelson rounded out the top three with 54:02.2 and 59:01.8 respectively.

With all 18 stages now completed and all of the points shelled out, all that is left is for the number crunching to see who comes out on top in the overall General classification. Expect some surprises once the best 14 of 18 races are taken to determine the overall winners. Results will be posted on www.peakcentrevancouver.ca.

RWR and the Peak Centre would once again like to take the time to thank all of the riders and the series’ sponsors, Easton, Pedal, and Maxxis. All are responsible for another successful season in the books. Riders who rode 10 or more stages are eligible for the draw for a set of Easton wheels. Stay tuned for the results!

Cheers,

Mike

Peak Centre Winter Racing Series – Stage 17 Results

Mike Nash didn’t break the course record of 33:45.9, but he put on an impressive display of power on his was to winning yet another stage of the Ride with Rendall/Peak Winter Series. After the stage, Nash commented how he left nothing and risked everything by going out fast. While he didn’t fade or blow up, Nash averaged an incredible 402 watts on his way to a time of 34:07.4. Second place went to Nash’s RWR teammate, Marc Boudreau, whose blistering time of 35:46.7 was overshadowed only by Nash’s incredible ride, but should not to be forgotten. Third place went to Ron Amos with a time of 37:00.8. Amos has had a consistent winter series and his growing form should pay dividends once he hits the roads outside.

In the women’s category, the record was not broken either, but once again we were treated to excellent rides. Elite triathlete, Cynthia Wilson put the final touches on her winter training by setting the fastest time on Stage 17’s time trial course. Her time of 39:01.7 was over a minute faster than second place rider Tenille Hoogland. Hoogland still managed a solid ride of 40:19.5 to safely secure second. Third place went to Steven’s road rider Wendy Blagdon, who turned in a time of 42:27.0.

In Vancouver, Ted Russo put up the fastest time with a 37:58.4 which was good enough for 6th overall but not quite fast enough to challenge the Vancouver course record of 37:23.6 set by Russ Stead earlier this year. Brian Griffin took the 2nd place spot with a 38:57.7 and Mike McIvor took 3rd place with a 39:42.2.

Full Stage results available at http://www.ridewithrendall.com/results/2008/?race=20080406&city=Combined and they will be updated shortly at http://www.peakcentrevancouver.ca/race_series_2007-08.php.

With one last stage to go, and with the stage returning to the extended time trial course, riders have one more chance to, in the words of Mike Nash, leave nothing and risk everything for the final bragging rights.

To book your start time, call:

Vancouver, Peak Centre, (604) 299-7959

Montreal, Peak Centre Mansfield, (514) 390-1230

Ottawa, Peak Centre, (613) 737-PEAK or use the online booking system at www.ridewithrendall.com

With only one stage to go, RWR would once again like to take the time to thank all of the riders and the series’ sponsors, Easton, Pedal, Maxxis, and the Peak Center. With one race left in the winter series, riders will have the season to look back on the hard work put in through the winter and we would like to thank all of those who came out and wish them continued success.

Cheers,

Mike

Cycling BC overview of BC Cup Races

Message from Cycling BC outlining BC Cup 2008

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Cycling BC, I would like to wish you every success for the 2008 racing season and provide the following information to help you prepare effectively for the 2008 BC Cup which gets underway this weekend with the ever popular Harris Roubaix organized by Atomic Racing and Central Vancouver Cycling Club.

Bc Cup Structure
Cycling BC met with various stakeholders to come to a collective decision on the structure of the 2008 Road BC Cup Series that best reflects Cycling BC's diverse membership and encourages participation within all riders interested in competitive Cycling. As a result, a few changes have been made to the BC Cup Structure for the 2008 Season and we would like to encourage all riders review the revised structure in advance of the Harris Roubaix race this weekend.

Early Registration
Cycling BC and each of the BC Cup race organizers would like to encourage all riders to register for races at least one week before the race (click here to register for the Harris Roubaix). This will help the organizer provide the riders with the best possible race day experience and help ensure that categories are not combined due to low registration. Importantly, a race organizer may make application to Cycling BC to combine categories if one week before the race there are less than 15 riders registered in a particular category.

Women Racing
Our stakeholder meetings re-affirmed the need for a women's only race category and this year's BC Cup structure provides a few new option for some riders. The 2008 BC Cup season provides Category 3 women the option to race with the Category 1 / 2 women or with the Category 4 women. However, only Category 3 riders who compete in the Category 1 / 2 group will receive upgrade points. Masters athletes in the 40+ age group also have the option to race in the new masters category (see below).

Masters 40+
A 40+ Masters Category has been added to the 2008 BC Cup to encourage participation and competition between our older athletes. This category is open to male and female riders age 40+ with international racing licenses who are in category 3, 4, or 5. Riders in this field do not receive upgrade points and the category is not a BC Cup Series. However, results of male and female riders entered in this category are separated by the organizer for the purpose of awarding 'prize of the day'.

BC Cup Races
The 2008 Road BC Cup Series consists of 8 races with the best 6 results for each rider contributing to his or her final ranking for those categories to which BC Cup points apply (see below). The series includes one-day Circuit Races (Road Races, Criterium Races), and stage races.

  • Harris Roubaix Road Race, April 13
  • Race the Ridge Stage Race (RR, ITT, Crit), April 26 / 27
  • Team Coastal Surrey Road Race, May 25
  • Team Coastal Abbotsford Road Race, June 8
  • Yaletown Grand Prix Criterium, July 1
  • Atomic Eastside Criterium, July 6
  • Total Restoration Kelowna Stage Race (RR, ITT, Crit), August 2 / 3
  • Team Coastal Surrey Criterium, August 17

Participation in the BC Cup Final (Team Coastal Surrey Criterium, August 17) is mandatory in order to figure in the final series classification.

Good luck from all at Cycling BC.

Yours sincerely,
Keith Ryan
Chief Executive Officer
Cycling British Columbia

Hell Week

For anyone out there who thinks 200km in one day is just getting warmed up, see here for Hell Week.

BC Randeneurs will be toiling mightily next week as they do 1500km in four rides over the week.

From the info page:

Based on the old randonneur saying, “In for a 200, in for 1500”, the Vancouver Island contingent of the BC Randonneurs has established a ‘compact’ super randonneur brevet series (200k; 300k; 400k and 600k) starting with the Tour de Cowichan 200 on April 12th. Originally, the concept was to ride each brevet, back to back. 1500k in 100.5 hours! After considerable whining, complaining and then negative publicity initiated by an unnamed webmaster J [Link], the concept was revised.

Randonneurs now have a whole week to complete the compact super randonneur series, which includes considerable rest time to explore the scenic wonders of Vancouver Island not already examined while riding the compact brevets. ‘Normal’ randonneurs can choose to ride any one, or several, of the individual brevets which comprise the Eau de Hell Week and earn the
respective distance medal(s).

Other randonneurs will earn the new, coveted and prestigious BC Randonneur 1500 k Hell Week pin should they manage to complete the full compact brevet series*:

Saturday, April 12th – The traditional Tour de Cowichan 200k
Sunday, April 13th –
The reverse direction version of The Hills Are Alive 300k (Alive Are the Hills)
Monday, April 14th --
relax
Tuesday, April 15th –
The Lost (But Not Forgotten) 400k (includes the Tour de Cowichan route in reverse and some Back Country Roads territory)
Wednesday, April 16th –
relax
Thursday, April 17th –
Ride for Gold 600k (Chemainus to Gold River and return)

Ride with Rendall - Peak Winter Series - Stage 16 Results

RWR/Peak Winter Series – Stage 16 Results

So far this series, Mike Nash has been the dominant rider winning multiple stages. Going into Stage 16 of the Ride with Rendall/Peak Winter Series, the question for most wasn't if Mike would win, but rather by how much. Marc Boudreau threw down a stellar time of 52:38.8 and looked to be on his way to repeating his stage 15 win, that is until Nash took over and blew the minute hand of the clock with a time of 48:32.5. As a result, Boudreau had to settle for second. Third place went to Rob Orange who posted a time of 54:30.8.

Wendy Blagdon took the stage on the challenging 30km course. Her winning time of 1:01:22.9 moved her higher in the general classification and might prove that consistency pays off. Second place went to Nicola Johnson and third place went to Frances Russell. Both riders had steady rides to finish with times of 1:07:33.5 and 1:11:00.9 respectively.

Smooth and steady might win the stage, but a burst of power puts you on top in the Maxxis sprint competition. Stage 16 was also part of the competition where riders Max watts/kg at the end of the stage determines the sprint winner. Top bragging rights went to Ryan Phelps, who powered up to an astounding 17.2 watts/kg. Second place went to Glen Rendall (16.2 watts/kg), and third to Mike Nash (14.6watts/kg). The surprise women's Maxxis sprinter went to Ingrid Cooney (6.7 watts/kg). Blagdon took second with 6.1 watts/kg, followed by Johnson (5.5 watts/kg) in third.

For more detailed stage 16 results please see www.ridewithrendall.com or http://www.peakcentrevancouver.ca/race_series_2007-08.php.

Stage 17 returns one last time to the series' time trial. Keen followers of the series are hoping for a match-up between Mike Nash and current record holder, Jet Fuel's Derrick St. John. Nash came pretty close to the record held by St. John and with Nash's form right now looking to be unstoppable, the question is will St. John rise to the challenge and put everything on the line to defend the record.

Will we see the magic again . . . who knows? Perhaps someone else will come out of the woodwork to challenge the record. Riders like Warren MacDonald, Osmond Bakker, Natasha Elliott, Aaron Fillion, or someone we haven't even thought of will give it a go. Then again, the record might just be untouchable. Let's find out! Do you have a PB in you?

To book your start time, call:

Montreal, Peak Centre Mansfield, (514) 390-1230

Ottawa, Peak Centre, (613) 737-PEAK or use the online booking system at www.ridewithrendall.com

With only a few more stages to go, RWR would once again like to take the time to thank all of the riders and the series' sponsors, Easton, Pedal, Maxxis, and the Peak Center.

Cheers,

Mike

Harris Roubaix - dike upgraded

The dike portion of the race has been re-finished since last year.

It appears that the dike surface is better than it was last year. It was raised and topped with gravel last summer. And that has compacted nicely along most of the part used for the race.

There are some largish potholes at the western end just before the graveled part ends.
