Cycling BC overview of BC Cup Races

Message from Cycling BC outlining BC Cup 2008

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of Cycling BC, I would like to wish you every success for the 2008 racing season and provide the following information to help you prepare effectively for the 2008 BC Cup which gets underway this weekend with the ever popular Harris Roubaix organized by Atomic Racing and Central Vancouver Cycling Club.

Bc Cup Structure
Cycling BC met with various stakeholders to come to a collective decision on the structure of the 2008 Road BC Cup Series that best reflects Cycling BC's diverse membership and encourages participation within all riders interested in competitive Cycling. As a result, a few changes have been made to the BC Cup Structure for the 2008 Season and we would like to encourage all riders review the revised structure in advance of the Harris Roubaix race this weekend.

Early Registration
Cycling BC and each of the BC Cup race organizers would like to encourage all riders to register for races at least one week before the race (click here to register for the Harris Roubaix). This will help the organizer provide the riders with the best possible race day experience and help ensure that categories are not combined due to low registration. Importantly, a race organizer may make application to Cycling BC to combine categories if one week before the race there are less than 15 riders registered in a particular category.

Women Racing
Our stakeholder meetings re-affirmed the need for a women's only race category and this year's BC Cup structure provides a few new option for some riders. The 2008 BC Cup season provides Category 3 women the option to race with the Category 1 / 2 women or with the Category 4 women. However, only Category 3 riders who compete in the Category 1 / 2 group will receive upgrade points. Masters athletes in the 40+ age group also have the option to race in the new masters category (see below).

Masters 40+
A 40+ Masters Category has been added to the 2008 BC Cup to encourage participation and competition between our older athletes. This category is open to male and female riders age 40+ with international racing licenses who are in category 3, 4, or 5. Riders in this field do not receive upgrade points and the category is not a BC Cup Series. However, results of male and female riders entered in this category are separated by the organizer for the purpose of awarding 'prize of the day'.

BC Cup Races
The 2008 Road BC Cup Series consists of 8 races with the best 6 results for each rider contributing to his or her final ranking for those categories to which BC Cup points apply (see below). The series includes one-day Circuit Races (Road Races, Criterium Races), and stage races.

  • Harris Roubaix Road Race, April 13
  • Race the Ridge Stage Race (RR, ITT, Crit), April 26 / 27
  • Team Coastal Surrey Road Race, May 25
  • Team Coastal Abbotsford Road Race, June 8
  • Yaletown Grand Prix Criterium, July 1
  • Atomic Eastside Criterium, July 6
  • Total Restoration Kelowna Stage Race (RR, ITT, Crit), August 2 / 3
  • Team Coastal Surrey Criterium, August 17

Participation in the BC Cup Final (Team Coastal Surrey Criterium, August 17) is mandatory in order to figure in the final series classification.

Good luck from all at Cycling BC.

Yours sincerely,
Keith Ryan
