Fwd: Peak Centre Winter Racing Series - Stage 14 Results

Peak Winter Racing Series - Stage 14 Results

The Kings Crown – Stage 14 Hill climb

Mike Nash is the King of the Ride with Rendall/ Peak Winter Series, winning every stage he has entered this year. Three others have won stages but the reality is those victories have come when the King is not in court.   In fact, in the history of the series, Mike has only been beaten once in his 23 starts since 2006. One has to go back to Stage 12 in last year's series when Derrick St. John bested Nash on a long course to see Mike take anything other than the prize podium spot. Since then, Nash has made it look easy in the following 13 stages he has started…  That was until Stage 14 this past weekend.

Breaking Mike's streak and reaching for the crown, Ride with Rendall teammate, Ron Amos, rode a very controlled and strategic race from start to finish. Redlining it up the steeper pitches and resting on the easier slopes, Ron finished with a time of 42:42.7. Mike Nash kept his podium streak alive by coming in second. (42:59.9). Behind him, Casey Roth was locked in a battle for third overall with eventual women's stage winner Sue Schlatter.  Schlatter rode away from Roth on the steeper pitches while Roth tried to salvage pride on the shallower sections of the climb. Unfortunately Roth mistimed his finish by 5 seconds and conceded third place overall, consoled slightly by the fact that he took third in the men's field. (Schlatter 44:01.5 vs. Roth 44:06.1)

While Sue was lighting up the overall and taking the women's field win, Tenille Hoogland rode to another podium followed by Carol Deavy at 47:03.4 and 48:41.9 respectively.

Stage 14's uphill course was also part of the Series KOM classification where rider's average power to weight on the stage classifies them in a separate competition. Taking the KoM in the men's field was Mike Nash who averaged 4.35watts/kg over the entire course. Ron Amos strategy to ride easier on the shallower slops might have won the stage, but it hurt him in the KOM competition. Ron finished second (4.21 average watts/kg) while Casey Roth produced 4.05watts/kg to take third in the men's field. However, Schlatter once again got the best of Roth with an average watts/kg of 4.80 to take the women's category and bragging rights when she produced the highest number for the stage. Carol Deavy put out 4.08 watts/kg to take second ahead of Tenille Hoogland (3.90 watts/Kg).

Stage 15 remains in the hills and once again is part of the KOM competition.

All eyes will be on Amos to see if he can defend the crown. Will he simply be King for a day or will he repeat to hold onto the crown?
